Lehrstuhl für Angewandte Mathematik
The Chair of Applied Mathematics focuses on cutting-edge research in various fields. One key area is stochastics, where we recently secured two new projects from the Austrian Science Foundation. These projects explore how random processes affect chemical and biological systems. Another key area are deep learning methods combined with stochastic methods to develop strategies for energy market trading, including anticipating random crashes.
Another major focus is operations research. Here, optimization algorithms play a crucial role, especially in the digitalization of industrial logistics. Dr. Stanek, in collaboration with KFU Graz, is working on innovative algorithms for complex covering problems in logistics. He is also developing a new, faster matching algorithm to address key challenges in job distribution, resource allocation, and partner matching.
Due to the new focus on digitalization, applied mathematics is also coming more into focus. Algorithmic and quantitative processes have a strong impact on our world today, such as the Fast Fourier Transform, which enables speech recognition, processing, streaming, and real-time voice transmission.
Operations research, numerical methods, and, in particular, optimization algorithms help to use resources efficiently, which is essential for maximizing efficiency, including in terms of climate neutrality. Understanding and working with "uncertainty and randomness" is crucial in data science, machine learning, and data processing. Next year, the department will offer a new course on "Stochastics," which is already part of the Industrial Data Science curriculum.
Handling high-dimensional and large data sets (big data) is equally important to dealing with random effects. Knowledge from "Inverse Problems" is key to addressing such challenges. A lecture on programming in Python is also offered.
